Here are our favorite hair care secrets for stronger, healthier and not so time consuming beautifully natural hair!
1. BANISH OIL AND RESIDUE:
Oils and residue from the products that we use build up in our hair over time, even our shampoo can leave residue behind. All of the build-up can put a major halt on hair growth never mind that it weighs down your hair and makes it dull and flat. There is a natural way to remove the excess residue without completely stripping your hair of the oils it needs and the ingredients are probably already in your pantry.
>> In the shower, wet your hair completely. Mix about ½ cup (or a handful) of baking soda in your hands with warm water until it makes a paste. [Mixing in too much water too quickly can cause the baking soda to dissolve, so add water slowly.] Use the paste, as you would shampoo, massaging it into your scalp at the roots of your hair and working your way down to the tips. Rinse the paste from your hair with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and warm water. Emerge with a clean head of healthy, shiny hair.
I can already see all of the wrinkling noses at the thought of apple cider vinegar. Yes, it has a strong smell, but I PROMISE, the smell fades after a few minutes and soon it will be gone completely. Plus, the benefits of apple cider vinegar are so amazing; enduring the smell for a few minutes is completely worth it!
If this makes your hair feel dry afterwards, rubbing a small amount of coconut oil into your hands and then running your hands through your hair will help restore the moisture and shine plus your hair will smell amazing! * I like to use a mixture of almond and coconut oil- just remember to make sure they are both pure organic oils with no additives.
2. GO CHEMICAL FREE:
For an all natural chemical free hair care regimen, check out these home made options from Wellness Mama (a wonderful blog that happens to be a particular favorite of mine).
>> Hair Spray
>> Dry Shampoo
3. DEEP CONDITION:
>>Instead of piling even more chemicals into your hair to repair the damage of previous chemicals, Coconut oil can also be used as a deep conditioner. Apply a generous amount to the hair and scalp, massaging it in. Coil your hair on top of your head and pin it in place. Wait about 20-30 minutes and then rinse out well with warm water and shampoo as usual.
Deep conditioning nights give you a wonderful excuse to take a healing detox bath as you wait for the coconut oil to work its magic! Check out our Ultimate Detox Bath Guide and make it a total body experience.
4. REDUCE FRIZZ AND FLY AWAYS:
>>Rub a very small amount of pure organic coconut oil into your clean hands then run your hands through your hair, not lingering too long on the roots. Besides taming those unruly hairs, coconut oil has wonderful benefits that encourage healthy hair and scalp.
Check out my post, Why I love coconut oil.
>>Spray a clean toothbrush with home made hairspray and brush the hairs into place.
>>After washing and rinsing your hair, run cold water over it for a few seconds to close the follicle and help keep frizz at bay once the hair dries.
5. GET WAVES IN NO TIME:
>>Get loose beach waves or curls for longer hair on a time crunch by pulling all of your hair into a ponytail and secure it with a rubber band. Flip your head over and after spraying your brush or comb with home made hair spray, comb through your hair. Now curl out sections of your ponytail. Release the ponytail and shake your hair out. It actually saves a ton of time and it works really well!
>> Another great way to get soft waves fast is to separate the hair into 4-5 sections. After sealing each section of hair with a heat protectant, braid each section and then run a flat iron over the braids. Run a blow dryer set on cool over each braid for a few seconds, then unbraid and shake out your hair for soft, natural looking waves.
6. PROTECT YOUR HAIR FROM HEAT:
>>Protect your hair from heat… every. single. time you use the blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron. To protect your hair without chemicals there are several natural oils that will do the trick. You can use each of the following oils alone or mix them together to combine their natural qualities and create wonderful smelling hair. Just remember to always wait until hair is completely dry before applying heat.
-Grapeseed Oil: this natural heat protectant actually tends to do a better job at protecting your hair than most store bought items.
-Argon Oil: Often referred to as “liquid gold” this amazing natural oil is rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids as well as vitamin E.
– Coconut oil: Besides its natural ability to protect you hair from heat, this oil also helps prevent dandruff, helps your hair retain moisture and encourages the growth of strong, healthy hair.
– Refined Avacado Oil: Famous for being the best herbal sunscreen there is with strong UV absorption properties that extend to both UVA and UVB rays, this totally natural hair product is something you can mix with other oils or use alone as a great way to protect your hair from heat damage.
Those are my favorites, but there are a few other options to throw in the mix as well including Shae Butter, Sunflower Oil, Olive Oil and Macadamia Nut Oil.
