OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Skin Deep Exposures Magazine is blog site as well as an online and in print publication. We are committed to inspiring women to meet each other where we are and challenge each other to discover a healthy and positive perception of ourselves while endorsing more natural and wholly productive lifestyles. As we share our stories, our struggles, our passions and our wisdom, our goal is to promote the significance of each individual journey and the recognition of the beauty of the scars and the triumphs that accompany our unique testimonies. We strive to encourage one another to recognize and embrace the extraordinary God- given beauty we each possess from the inside, out. Through the discovery of this beauty, may we become an example to those watching us, learning from us and developing a sense of identity in regards to us.
A CALL TO ACTION: The goal of Skin Deep Exposures is simply to be invited into the lives of as many women as we can, as we share inspiration, encouragement and wisdom in the promotion of a less superficial and more all- encompassing beauty. In the same vein, we also strive to spotlight the hobbies, accomplishments and support the entrepreneurial pursuits of others that align with our mission statement.
THE WHY: There is no denying physical attractiveness. There are people in the world who are extremely pleasant to look at. They are the faces coveted for the cover of magazines, ad campaigns and commercials. But those faces, those photographs we see in mainstream media, [most of which have been manipulated and air brushed into something fantastical] do they hold the key to what it means to be beautiful? Is that the real life standard that we are to hold ourselves up against? Each of us has been created in such a unique way. The cookie- cutter mold that we are encouraged to cram ourselves into eventually becomes a prison of either shame or false pretense.
We have so much more to offer beyond the outside packaging! Why does our outward appearance so often become our quantifying quality? We can become weighed down from a young age by the perceptions of who and what we should look like and we find ourselves constantly falling short. As we develop, we struggle to know how to see ourselves for who we really are. Our appearance is constantly changing, yet we are too often encouraged to throw all of our eggs in that basket even though we are all but guaranteed front row seats to its gradual unraveling. It is no wonder that crippling insecurity haunts so many women and girls. For the most part, many of us have a very limited idea of who we are. There are so many complex layers that make us the daughter, the sister, the wife, the mother, the friend, the person who is loved and cherished by those around us.
As a Photographer, I am constantly exposed to this issue from a unique perspective. I work with women who imprison themselves within the bars of industry standards for beauty. Despite the absolute loveliness that so many of these women posses, they are living lives full of anxiety and insecurity, constantly judging and comparing themselves against an impossible ideal.
I became passionate about this issue of how women and girls are encouraged to see themselves when my children were born. I want to show them the beauty they hold inside of themselves and see them grow into healthy, strong and confident people! What we look like on the outside is always changing, often beyond our control. So often as we live in the insecurity of that change, we pass a message of unhealthy identity onto the next generation.
FROM THE EDITOR: I am certainly familiar with the struggle of insecurity and as I live my own journey of discovering myself from the inside out, I wanted to reach out and ask other women to join me. What started out as a simple photography project in 2011 meant to help women see the true beauty in who they are void of makeup and Photoshop, quickly grew wings and took flight. Skin Deep Exposures is now a blog and magazine publication that encompasses the whole of who we are as women inside and out.
I am so excited about the impact that Skin Deep Exposures has had and the reach that it has acquired over the last (almost seven) years! I never imagined that it would grow as it has. I have had the humbling privilege of meeting and getting to know so many amazing women who inspire and encourage me. I am continually blessed by the lives and examples, the stories and the wisdom of these incredible ladies. Everyone now involved in Skin Deep Exposures remains passionate about our effort to continue taking steps towards changing women’s perceptions of true beauty and inspiring self- discovery. If nothing else, it is exciting to know that of all of the publications out there for women, Skin Deep Exposures is one that will always carry a positive and uplifting message.
As you are reading this, I hope that you will take the time to recognize your own unique beauty, and the purpose and potential that you were uniquely created for.
