My kids love to draw and color! There are always piles of notebooks and coloring books and scrap paper and crayons and markers and pencils on our dining room table. I love that they love expressing themselves artistically so much, but the constant need to pick up art supplies from my dinner table was driving me crazy!
My solution was to create a workspace for them that was dedicated to their art. I found these cheap desks at Target and decided they were exactly what we needed so we grabbed two of them. This allows for each of the three kids to have their own drawer plus there was one drawer left over for miscellaneous stuff that they all share.
I loved the price of the desks but I was not in love with the look of them. If nothing else, they definitely needed some knobs on the drawers! Trusting the kids to gently open and close those drawers in the absence of knobs was not happening.
Since these were going to be art desks and would likely end up with art all over them anyway, I decided to paint the tops of them with chalk board paint. So after giving them a good scrub and a light sanding, they got their first coat.
I ended up doing three coats of the chalk board paint. I probably could have stopped at two but I know my kids and the zeal with which they go at their artwork and I wanted to be safe.
The next step was the drawers. I knew they needed knobs but I also wasn’t a huge fan of the wood color so I grabbed a roll of self stick wall paper and gave the drawers a face lift.
Next, we had to measure and drill the knob holes.
Once that was done, I added these cute yellow knobs that i bought a long time ago for another project but never used them. I think they are perfect!
I found these cool storage ottomans, again at Target to use as benches. It works out perfectly because they slide right under the desks when not in use and they have adequate storage space as the new home of all of our Legos (which my vacuum and I have a love/ hate relationship with).
I am pretty happy with the result and it has been wonderful not having art supplies burying my dining room table! The kids love their new art station. It has already been well used!
