Lemon water is nothing new. A tall glass of water and a wedge of lemon has long been a staple service at any restaurant. I am willing to bet the majority of us have had it at one time or another and many people enjoy the concoction regularly- and for good reason. I have been drinking lemon water for a long time. I admit that my main reason for drinking it is that without the addition of lemon, I would utterly fail at consuming the recommended amount of H2O every day. I love water, but it gets old very quickly. I recently learned that not only is lemon water great as a motivator for actually drinking water in order to maintain hydration but it also packs a huge punch full of incredible health benefits!
This little slice of nature does wonders for your overall health. From boosting the digestive system and immunity to encouraging natural cleansing. A small squeeze of fresh lemon is also packed with potassium, vitamin B and C, calcium, magnesium, antioxidants, and iron.
If that isn’t enough motivation for you to add a bit of lemon to your water, here are fifteen more reasons that lemon water is a really great idea!
1- HEALTHY SKIN
Lemons are packed with Vitamin C, an antioxidant that promotes skin elasticity along with helping to fight blemishes and wrinkles. Lemons can also help the body shed dead skin cells, heal a sunburn and reduce the symptoms of eczema. (University of Maryland Medical Center study)
2- BOOST IMMUNE SYSTEM
The National Institutes of Health links drinking lemon water daily to boosting the effectiveness of the lymphatic system. Thus a shot of this Vitamin C superfood in your morning glass of water helps support your immune system as it fights off germs and viruses throughout the day.
3- REDUCE PAIN AND INFLAMATION
Regular consumption of lemon juice helps to reduce the acidity in your body which lowers the level of uric acid which can build up in your joints and cause pain and inflammation. So next time that chronic pain flares up, reach for a tall glass of lemon water as opposed to the asprin for natural relief.
4- DIGESTION AID
Drinking lemon water helps keep your body’s natural digestion in top working order by loosening toxins that have taken up residence in your digestive tract. The removal of these toxins helps relieve indigestion, bloating, heartburn and gas.
5- HIGH IN PECTIN FIBER
Lemons boast a high content of pectin fiber (a water soluble fiber molecule). Pectin turns into a sticky gel-like compound when combined with water which attach to cholesterol-rich bile within your intestines and carrying it out of your body. Pectin consumption impacts blood cholesterol levels and it help regulates blood glucose levels. It also helps remove toxins such as lead and mercury from your body. Pectin consumption is additionally a great way to help reduce hunger cravings. The highest levels of pectin are found in the peel and the pulp of the lemon.
6- NATURAL DETOX
Along with the high content of intestine cleansing pectin, lemons also help to boost your body’s natural enzyme function which in turn stimulates your liver. The liver’s main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. As it does so, the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines. The liver also makes proteins important for blood clotting and other functions.
7- THE NEW COFFEE
Yes- that seems a little extreme… I myself am well aware of the enormous importance that coffee has in my life. I am not sure I could just give it up. I mean, I love you lemon water but to say you are the “new coffee”- that’s a tough pill to swallow. For arguments sake, however, let’s examine the facts.
After a night of sleep, the bodily tissues are dehydrated and full of toxins. A large glass of clean water in the morning is needed in order to flush out those toxins and rehydrate the cells. Unfortunately coffee is a diuretic that depletes your body of water reserves and essential minerals and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium & magnesium. Instead of relying on adrenal stimulants like coffee for that morning kick which produce dirty energy in the form of blood sugar swings and oxidative stress, a glass of lemon water produces clean energy by hydrating and oxygenating the body for energy and mental clarity. So let’s just say that a glass of lemon water will be consumed before and then after the sacred morning Cup O’ Joe.
8- PROMOTES HEALTHY CIRCULATION
Lemon is a great source of citrus bioflavonoid anti-oxidant phytonutrients – otherwise known as Vitamin P.
Studies have shown that vitamin P enhances the anti-oxidant capability of vitamin C. These bioflavonoids also improve capillary permeability and overall blood flow. This is especially important for oxygenating tissues and maintaining normal blood pressure. These anti-oxidants have also been shown to reduce swelling, venous backup and edema. 9- ANTIMICROBIAL & ANTIVIRAL
Lemon juice and lemon essential oil have both been linked to decreasing the prevalence of fungal, bacterial, viral infections, and when consumed they help fight and reduce the symptoms and recurrence of colds and flus as well as other gastrointestinal symptoms. So next time you start to feel the beginnings of a cold, spice your tea up with a bit of lemon, just like mom does!
10- MOOD ENHANCER
According to studies from Ohio State University, the scent of lemons alone improves brain function and mood! A squirt of lemon in your water can help relieve depression and boost your mood by calming your nervous system and reducing stress.
11- RESPERATORY HEALTH
Lemon water can reduce phlegm; and can also help you breathe properly and aids a person suffering with asthma.
12- REDUCE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Lemon contains potassium which controls high blood pressure and reduces the effect of nausea and dizziness.
13- ORAL HEALTH
Lemon juice stops bleeding gums and reduces toothaches.
14- HEADACHE REMEDY
Drinking lemon water (or warm tea with lemon juice) is a great way to relieve a myriad of headaches from a hangover headache to a sinus headache and most in between.
