With the cold days behind us, we’re finally enjoying the warm summer sun! This is the perfect chance to give your body the cleanse and detox it’s been craving all throughout the winter months. Detoxification has become a new trend with plenty of people becoming curious about what it means to detox your body. This is awesome since participating in a detox is actually one of the best things you can treat your body to and is a great first step towards more long-term healthy lifestyle goals.
If your body is beginning to indicate that it is time for a detox, or if you are just ready to make a few healthy changes but are unsure of where to start, here are a few simple and natural ways to get your body cleaned out.
Keep in mind that depending on the lifestyle you’ve been leading up to this point, your body will take a different amount of time to adjust to new habits, such as eating differently and getting rid of toxins. Anything shorter than 10 days might not give you the desired results. So, let’s agree that a 10-day power-boost to jump start healthy living is ideal. Once your body goes through its detox stage, you are bound to feel more energized, creative, mentally focused and more apt to stick to your healthy routines. Additionally, you’ll most likely experience weight loss as you get rid of excess belly fat and start to feel less bloated. You will also see a decrease in blemishes, irritations and pimples as you experience healthier skin that can only be achieved from the inside, out. Even your mood can improve! Doesn’t it sound amazing? Sure it does. And when you think about it – all of this is just a simple and very healthy changes away.
DRINK MORE WATER
The first and most important step to any detox is WATER! Your body relies on water for almost everything!
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells, and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues”
Before you begin anything else, it is important to begin developing the habit of drinking lots and lots of water every single day. Your body expels water constantly throughout the day by breathing, perspiring, urinating and bowel movements. It is important to constantly replenish those losses.
According to the Institute of Medicine, an adequate daily intake for men is roughly 13 cups or 3 liters of total beverages a day and about 9 cups or 2.2 liters a day for women. That is a lot of water!
Getting in the habit of consuming so much water can be tough, but there are plenty of ways to shake things up and make water intake a lot more interesting and tasty by making your water do double duty. Infusing water with fruits and veggies is a great way to get lots of vitamins and minerals in addition to those 9 recommended cups a day. You can also opt for a super tasty green or Superfood smoothie that can take your detox to the next level!
CLEAN UP YOUR DIET
In addition to drinking a lot of water on daily basis, the next important step in your detox is your diet. This can be a pretty extreme change for a lot of people as the habit of eating irregularly and consuming all sorts of processed food is extremely widespread in this day and age. After all, we’re living such fast-paced lives that it’s sometimes hard to remember what day it is, let alone squeeze salad making into the process! Choosing to love yourself and focus on your health will require a lifestyle change in the long term, which means recognizing unhealthy eating habits and committing to developing better ones.
Excluding industrially processed foods whose origin you aren’t sure about and turning to more whole foods is an important dietary goal. This can be a big change, so commit to making it gradually as your budget allows.
Begin with clean food that’s gentle yet healthy. Eliminate foods that have barcodes, i.e. anything that comes in a (processed) bag, can or box. The next recommended step would be to minimize or even eliminate foods with dairy, added sugar, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, soy and animal protein.
Try to stick to organic fruits and veggies as they are the healthiest option for cleaning your body and keeping it clean. While they may be a bit expensive at the beginning, once you learn your way around the kitchen (with this new lifestyle), you’ll also learn how to save up. Vegetables, fruits, grains, greens, legumes and beans are perfect for filling up your pantry. Dandelion greens, parsley, spinach, peas, watercress, asparagus, fennel and mustard greens should become your favorite go-to foods! You can also add dark leafy greens such as collards, kale and Swiss Chard. The chlorophyll from the leaves feeds the blood, helping your body get rid of toxins much more efficiently. Making these changes in diet will help you not only be cleaner on the inside but you will feel and look cleaner too, I guarantee it.
Also, turn to instant vitamin and mineral boosts when you are pressed for time and can’t get them from the natural sources.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN
Another important aspect of keeping your body clean and healthy that many people overlook is the importance of taking care of your skin. The skin is our largest organ and it has the tendency to absorb the things it comes into contact with. This includes all of the ingredients in any beauty products we use, allowing them to flow into our bloodstream and disperse throughout our tissues and organs. It is important to be aware of the ingredients in your lotions, soaps, shampoos, sunscreens, cosmetics and other beauty products. Many contain very harmful additives and chemicals that can have adverse and even potentially harmful effects on your body. If you are up to the challenge, there are several options for making your own beauty products. A good way to help purge the unavoidable toxins that our skin absorbs on a daily basis is a detox bath.
It can also be beneficial to wear natural, breathable fabrics like easy organic cotton, light bamboo clothing, soft silk and similar materials. They will look great, feel amazing, and keep your body relaxed and unrestricted.
DETOXIFY YOUR MIND
Last, but not least, be sure to take care of yourself by eliminating stress wherever possible. Be sure to carve out time to decompress, relax and recharge. Stress is a great way to build up tons of toxins inside of your body. Dealing with excess stress can have a harmful effect on not only your mind but your body as well as it inhibits healthy organ function. Get into the habit of saying “No” to the things and people in your life that tend to drag you down or overwhelm you. Surround yourself with healthy relationships that are mutually beneficial. Take time to do the things you enjoy with the people who make you happy. Focus on the positive things in your life and don’t allow yourself to dwell on the negative things. When your mind is restful, your body will become more productive and efficient.
Mind your health in every way possible – it’s the basis of a good life.
