Oil pulling is the practice of swishing unrefined, high quality raw oils in your mouth in order to remove bacteria, toxins, and parasites that live in your mouth or lymph system, and pull congestion and mucus from your throat and loosen up your sinuses. The raw properties of the oil bind to all of these things living in your mouth and allow you to spit them in order to effectively “detox” them from your body. The oils also help re-mineralize your teeth and strengthen your gums and immune system by leaving behind healthy probiotic strains.
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic method for detox and rejuvenation. It’s a simple practice that yields wonderful results. Ayurvedic medicine is a practice that originated in India and Sri Lanka over 2000 years ago. The practice states that your health should be treated with holistic, natural therapies tailored to the needs of each individual.
The best and most widely used oil is unrefined, RAW coconut oil because it has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and enzymatic properties. To oil pull, simply swish 1/2 teaspoon of soft, liquefied oil in your mouth; similar to the way you would use a mouthwash; push, swirl, and pull the oil between your teeth, around your gums, exposing it to every part of your mouth except your throat (no gargling!). Swish the oil for as long as you can (typically 30 seconds to a few minutes). Once you are ready to spit, be sure to use a trash can or the toilet. Do not spit coconut oil in the sink as it will solidify and clog your pipes. Rinse your mouth out with clean water several times and then be sure to drink a nice tall glass of water to help distribute the minerals left behind by the oil as well as hydrating after a detox.
There are many health benefits to oil pulling that include the clearing of sinuses (which happens almost immediately), a boost in immune system function, teeth whitening and other benefits that come with detoxing your body. TIP: Do your oil pulling in the shower! Start swishing as you step in the shower and spit when you get out. This allows you to multi-task as well as keep your mind off of the taste of the oil (which I am not a huge fan of) and you wont be having to time yourself as you stand in front of the mirror!
