I’m sure most of us have been exposed to the buzz surrounding the breakout actress, Lupita Nyong’o since she took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. This beautiful woman moved most of us when she graced the Oscar stage and delivered a heartfelt and sincerely humble acceptance speech, which she concluded by saying,
“No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.”
Lupita has gained a huge amount of recognition for her debut role in 12 Years A Slave, including several awards and even more nominations. A few days before receiving her Oscar, Lupita was honored with the award for Best Breakthrough Performance at the seventh annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon hosted by Essence magazine. The acceptance speech she gave at this event was absolutely amazing! She shared her own struggle to attain beauty, after which, she shared incredible wisdom on what it means to be truly beautiful in a world where we are too often seen simply through the eyes of others and not the soul.
After watching this stunning speech, I was in tears! She is such an eloquent speaker, able to communicate a story with such passion and poetry that you can literally become mezmerized simply by the telling of her story. (After digging up a bit more information about her, I came to learn that she has quite a bit of writing experience on her resume, which is not at all surprising!) One of the most powerful things that she communicated in her speech, was a realization that came as the result of her own search for beauty, and through the reassurances of a very wise mother,
“beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be. And what my mother meant when she said you can’t eat beauty was that you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul.”
Lupita so beautifully concluded her speech by voicing her inspiring hope that her presence in the public eye would lead each young girl on a similar journey.
“That you will feel the validation of your external beauty, but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside. There is no shade to that beauty.”
A thousand AMEN’s!
